“Theater is a verb before it is a noun, an act before it is a place.”
– Martha Graham

“Doesn’t it seem, I don’t know, a little bit much?”
“Maybe from where you’re standing.”

With the inner workings now explored, Space will briefly discuss and, more extensively, present the most literal aspect to Motion’s vision, its aesthetic.

As the lens can sweep or flourish, push-in or stand still, raise or sink, it is evident that there is a dance to the camera itself and as such, its choreography will not only help illustrate the relevant thematics of a given scene or moment but, by its very Motion, allow us an additional means of exploring the larger philosophies present within the series as well.

One such recalled example of intended design is that this is a series specifically composed for the sensibilities of our digital age. This epoch, littered with its tiny billion screens and its pinching and swiping and scrolling, has evolved the audience’s metabolization of visual information in a curiously active way. As a result, Motion shall strive to approach its own presentation of information with a deliberate style to match these contemporary appetites.

Below are some examples that offer potential approaches centered around the facet of the iris. However, as the development of any piece’s visual language is something that is best created organically and within the braintrust of a talented production team, these examples are nothing more than bare sketches, cro-magnon outlines offered only with the intent to begin the conversation rather than serve as any kind of meaningful conclusion.

Additionally, while on the topic of visual approach, as it is something intertwined with the broader themes of the piece, the concept of liminality should also be mentioned.

While many popular works like The Shining, Severance, or even The Bear illustrate the general visual, ideological desire for liminal space, Motion will aim to contribute to this aesthetic conversation in its own intentional and considered way, particularly in conjunction with the feeling of liberation that occurs when a character breaks the lines of reality around them as they access the State. Ideally, these instances of attainment should result in a kind of catharsis, a breath of fresh air that feels all the sweeter after the subtle visual suffocation of hallways and dark, self-contained dance studios.
